I'd keep my fingers crossed for you if I could. ;-)

Granny J, you nailed it. I used to scorn Mensa as a bunch of wanna-bes. But then I met one in college, when I was a student and he was an employee, working a not very exalted job as a maintenance engineer.

His chapter had gotten some mail about my college test scores, which automatically qualified me to join. He'd approached me to become a member, which as always before, I politely declined.

But we talked for quite a while out under the sunny skies and beautiful trees of that campus. He explained what it was like to finally be acknowledged, and to simply have people to talk to, people who could understand what he was saying, and not bore him in return.

I've never forgotten that. So when I read about DC's dad, on a long and heartfelt thread at my blogmom Little Miss Attila's, I understood.khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06430423256832961746noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11967806.post-28669202529981231372008-03-29T01:02:00.000-04:002008-03-29T01:02:00.000-04:00k -- too many matters to comment on! Pollen and mold gave me the worst asthma as a kid; now I'm very grateful that they only make me sniffle and sneeze.

Obviously asthma, allergies and arthritis are all caused by a hyperactive immune system--a neurotic immune system is probably the appropriate word. On the bright side, we're highly unsusceptible to cancer.

The more I've moved around the world, exposing myself to all kinds of strange locations, different flora and interesting germs, the more my allergies have subsided. I have high hopes that by the time I'm Grandma's age, my immune system will be so buff, experienced and serene that it won't even think to go after my knuckles.Pretty Ladyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00342833918614545778noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11967806.post-66186532345949856632008-03-26T08:56:00.000-04:002008-03-26T08:56:00.000-04:00Pretty Lady, I didn't know your childhood asthma w...Pretty Lady, I didn't know your childhood asthma was that bad. Surely it's the allergy-provoked kind, if it worsened in spring and fall?

I agree about the connection between allergies and arthritis. I've been pondering that one for a long time, especially since our family allergies and arthritis are both so strong.

It's why the beesting venon treatment so intrigues me. There's a very common allergen, bee stings. If you sort of...startle the immune system, have it looking at beesting venom entering the system, I could easily see it re-ordering its work, and leaving off attacking joints for a while.

I've noticed many times, too, that people who get sick as adults have many different issues than kids do. They're often far more bitter, they have trouble accepting it, stay in denial or have huge guilt burdens. The kids taught me a lot about acceptance, about dealing with illness gracefully.

They, themselves, helped me deal with looking at their illnesses more calmly. I'm not done yet - but it's far easier than it used to be.

Thank you, Pops! And you're very welcome.

Pepek, HEE HEE!!! Well, thank you. And you didn't even know that I now have a shiny new recording of my father singing me *Happy Birthday* on my answering machine!

I told him I could blackmail him with it. But he said he wouldn't mind. ahHA! It's the old *Publish and Be Damned!* British Stiff Upper Lip at work, I see. Drat! Foiled again!

Oh Jean, thank you, and I don't mind a bit - especially seeing as I was late to YOURS just now! You sort of kick off our spring Birthday round.

Thank you, Morris! Th...Congratulations on reaching your half-century! That's wonderful! Happy Birthday!!!

I have rheumatoid arthritis in my family history as well, most notably in the grandmother that I take after. I think it must be connected to allergies, because it comes down on the same side.

I had asthma so bad as a child that I had to be hospitalized at 3, and spent several days in an oxygen tent. Years later, I attended a church youth group meeting, and one of the facilitators had been reading about asthma, and declared with sanctimonious emotion, "We are so lucky just to be able to breathe!!!"

I forbore to mention my asthma, because I didn't want to suddenly be the object of sticky, affected religious compassion.

The fact is, when I was a little kid, not being able to breathe in the spring and fall was just how life was. It wasn't pleasant, but I wasn't suffering the way older people suffer when they come down with an illness for the first time, and have to deal with the attendant fear, panic and alteration of life. I used to try to conceal my wheezing, both to avoid being dosed with nasty inhalers (I got that 'cromolyn sodium' junk, a white powder that 'coated the lungs,' which my intuition told me couldn't really be good for me) and to avoid getting Mom all upset. I knew I probably wasn't going to die, as long as I kept cool and my lungs didn't close up completely, and beyond that I just went along living my life.

I believe that we come into this life with very specific issues to resolve and lessons to learn, and that we possibly even choose the bodies best suited to learn these lessons. I've had more than one clairvoyant tell me that I was resolving grief at a betrayal in a past life; and indeed the emotion associated with the lung meridian in Chinese medicine is 'grief.'

This is not to say that I think we shouldn't do everything possible to heal and prevent childhood illnesses and suffering. It is to say that 1) suffering is of the mind as well as of the body, and minds at different stages suffer differently; 2) there may be a pattern behind it that we can't fully see, that makes sense in a larger perspective.

I say this only as an attempt to alleviate some of the empathic suffering of the viewer. ;-)Pretty Ladyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00342833918614545778noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11967806.post-23607978959773205882008-03-24T13:36:00.000-04:002008-03-24T13:36:00.000-04:00Nancy, good thing you asked LL that. I hope he's doing okay. Hope he can tolerate the meds increase too. What good is an adequate level if you can't take them, right?

SeaPhoenix, good to hear from you! And I have a New Discovery about your package: I bet if you do cover them with earth, perhaps as much as 1/2", you'll get better germination.

I found that out by accident last week. I'd been digging around and inadvertently covered a bunch of old unsprouted seeds. Suddenly I had new babies emerging all over the place. They are SO cute!

THANK YOU, NANCY and Erica!!! heh!
