Okay, only fair graphics, but that's okay. Shared video memory is a killer there. Livey doesn't strike me as a big Half Life or Unreal Tournament type anyway. The PCI Express slot is if she ever does want that.

I wish I knew more about how well the dual-core performs in comparison to single core processors that run faster. I suspect it will do 99% of what she wants it to in a blink.

Ginormous hard drive, very nice optical drive. To take full advantage of that 6.1 channel audio, a speaker upgrade would be needed.

And the card reader should make photo transfers to the computer a piece of cake.

Plus the LCD monitor and a full 2 GB of memory...well it's more than I have at work as my (two years old) high power workstation.

It sounds like Walter knows to give you directions to set her up with AVG Free Edition Virus Scanner, the free Sunbelt (formerly Kerio) Personal Firewall, and one of the free spyware scanners (my favorite is Spybot Search & Destroy).

Ah! Believe or not - 'phobe that I am! - I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to hear your opinion of all this. So, thank you. It looks like we got the right stuff for her particular needs.

I'd love to see her taking more pix. She seems more interested in that, now that she's seen the beautiful things around here through the lens of my camera. She's one of those who can sit in the car with me, at the edge of a store parking lot, and notice the beauty of the wildflowers (aka *weeds*) and birds and trees and the way a water tower looks among them off in the distance. That's one thing I didn't really know about her.

She loves music, so I'm glad to hear the audio is good. She basically had none, before. She couldn't run the videos and music other bloggers have - like yours. So even without upgrading the speakers yet, she is THRILLED with the sound.

Of course, I know nothing about the gaming and so forth you're talking about. But so far she's doing well with the things she likes to do. There's a lot to get used to, of course, and the odd little glitch here and there. One of her solitaire games came up with much smaller *cards* and she finally realized the maker said it wasn't fully compatible, or something, with Vista yet.

Walter already directed her to a couple of sites with those free virus etc. downloads. Again, I don't know anything about them, but they seemed to. She's been very busy putting it all together! Reminds me of more than one of your posts, there.

One of the very first things she said was: *OH!!! OMG!!! I CAN BACK UP MY BLOG NOW!!!*

heh!

My only concern is the Vista, however I know new computers come with it now. I've just heard how buggy it can be ... and slow. Hopefully she won't have any troubles with it. You and Walter did very well, K!!

It is way more than I will ever need! I am having trouble with the Vista. My old computer ran with Win98. Having rebuilt it so many times, I know all the ins and outs of Win98, but I know absolutely nothing about anything after that. Vista is giving me fits, but I'm determined to overcome it!
Thanks so much all of you! Love ya!

Dadcat was a long holdout to Win 98, despite my pleadings to upgrade to Win 2000 Pro when I had it available.

Now I'm the holdout at Win 2000. It is, after all, the last OS that can *ahem* be pirated readily.

I use Vista myself on a new DuoCore myself. As long as you have enough memory it'll sing along, albeit with the ocassional hiccup.. :)

Reading these kind of posts reminds me of just how technology truly is an integral part of our lives in this day and age, and I am 99% certain that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as memory gets cheaper, the possibility of uploading our memories onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could see in my lifetime.

My friend and I were recently discussing about the prevalence of technology in our day to day lives. Reading this post makes me think back to that debate we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as technology further innovates, the possibility of downloading our brains onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could experience in my lifetime.
